David Dunbar Buick is famous for founding the Buick Motor Company, the forerunner of General Motors, in the early 1900s. He was born in Arbroath in 1854 and emigrated to the USA when aged 2.
Unfortunately, he does NOT appear in my family tree.
His parents were Alexander Buick and Jane Rodger, both from Forfar, who married in 1853. Their parents are not named in the marriage record. However, Alexander and his parents appear in the 1851 Census in Forfar. Alexander is aged 20 and his parents are James (44) and Jean Buick (42). James was born in Mains, Forfarshire. I take this to be the parish of Mains & Strathmartine, a few miles north of Dundee, and this is where a James Buick was born in 1805, son of James Buick and Mary Black.
This family moved north to Forfar and then east to Arbroath, whereas my Buick family arrived in Arbroath from the north, from St Cyrus, Johnshaven and other parts of old Kincardineshire.
So, no connection to David Dunbar Buick.
