In the OPR, his parents are Alexander Anderson and Margt Nicols. There is no record of this couple in the 1788 Craig parish list.
The only family in the 1788 list is Alexander Anderson and Jean Nicol, with a son Alexander whose age seems consistent with this Alexander. (The 1788 list does not give ages, and assuming the children are in age order, Alexander's estimated birth was about 1779).
Alexander's death record is interesting. It gives his parents as Alexander Anderson and Jean Nicoll, with Margaret Nicoll crossed out. He was aged 90 according to his death record, actually 85 if I have the correct birth, so the informant, his son Robert, could have been over 60. Plenty of scope for mistakes with ancestors names.
I asked about this at the Register Office - it seems that registrars made mistakes like this all the time. Another possibility is that Jean was her Sunday name and everyone knew her as Margaret, or vice versa!
