Note
Although there's nothing in the marriage register saying David Shepherd was a widower when he married Ann Cargill in 1850, he was the only David Shepherd of this age in Auchmithie, and his son David is the only five year old David Shepherd in the 1851 census, when this son married he gave his parents as David Shepherd and Jane Shepherd, both deceased. I think the only explanation is that David Shepherd was widowed in 1846 two days after the birth of his son, David, and in 1850 married Ann Cargill.
David Shepherd's first wife, Jane Shepherd, would have been his niece, this is unusual, even for Auchmithie, however I can find no other Jane/Jean Shepherd born around this time, other than Janet Shepherd, born 1811, the sister of Jane Shepherd. Jane Shepherd is living with her widowed mother, Margaret Pert, in the 1841 census, she's the only Jane Shepherd in Auchmithie at that time.
